BRIGHAM S. SHULER, Colonel, USA, Retired

Colonel Brigham S. Shuler was born on 17 December 1941, in Bristol, Florida (near Tallahassee). He is married to the former Charlotte Hutto and they have two children, Mark and Beth.

In January of 1959, COL Shuler enlisted in the Regular Army. He completed OCS in Fort Benning, Georgia in 1962 and was assigned to the 4th Armored Division, Europe, where he served as Platoon Leader, Company Commander, and on the Brigade Staff. From Europe (1965) he went to VietNam, 1st Infantry Division where he served as XO and Company Commander. He was wounded and medically evacuated to CONUS. From Dec 1965 to Jun 1966 he was a patient at Dewitt Army Hospital, Ft. Belvoir, VA. When released he was sent to Fort Benning, GA where he served as Chief Instructor, Small Missile Team, Weapons Department, at the Infantry School until December 1967. After Infantry School, he returned to VietNam, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division and served from Sept 68 - Oct 69 as Assistant Brigade Operations Officer and Company Commander. In November 1969 he returned to Fort Benning, GA and became Operations and Executive Officer to the 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry. He moved to the 29th Infantry and remained there for six months before being sent to BYU where he received a BA in Political Science in 1972. (He later (1978) earned a Masters in Business Management from Central Michigan University.) From 1972 to 1977 he was assigned to the US Army Criminal Investigation Command in Washington, DC as Chief of Public Affairs. From August 1977 to Jan 1978 he attended The Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. He then served as Public Information Officer, at the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington, DC until Nov 1979, when he became Commander, Ft Knox District, US Army Criminal Investigation Command at Fort Knox, KY. In Aug 1983 he left Fort Knox to assume command as Professor of Military Science at Brigham Young University and served in this position until May 1987. From BYU he went back to Fort Knox, KY where he was promoted to Colonel and later retired to his home state of Florida.

Among the awards and honors Colonel Shuler has received are the Silver Star; Bronze Star w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Purple Heart; defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Achievement medal; Good Conduct Medal; Vietnam Honor Medal (2d Class); Vietnam Civic Action Honor Medal; Four awards of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Gold Star and Palm; Numerous Service Medals; Combat Infantry Badge; and Secretary of Defense Staff Badge. Civilian awards include Master M-Man (Achievement Award); Nominated by BYU as "Outstanding Young Man of America" 1978; Listed in "Who's Who in the West", 1986-87.

Other professional services rendered by Colonel Shuler include editor of a quarterly technical journal; published in professional military journals; freelance author; served as a member of mass communication committee, International Association of Chiefs of Police; Served as personal representative of Secretary of Defense and directed all public affairs of airlift of human remains from Jonestown, Guyana.
Colonel Shuler's church service has included bishop's counselor, Branch President; Ward Clerk, Stake Clerk, Stake Executive Secretary, Serviceman's Group Leader; Gospel Doctrine Teacher, and Stake Counselor.
